Herrington on the Bay is hiring a Part-Time Concierge (Host/Hostess). The Host/Hostess must be friendly, outgoing, organized, active, and be able to multi-task under pressure. Shifts are from 8:30am - 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays and some weekdays. The main responsibilities are to cover the Office & Phones, Greet Guests, Set-up meeting spaces for client appointments and bus dishes in our Yacht Club. The Herrington Yacht Club is a historic 2 story building without an elevator. The Concierge traverses the interior and exterior staircases multiple times per hour, often carrying full drinks and dishes. The Host/Hostess also communicates with the Culinary Team regarding guests arrivals.

Must be 21+ Years of Age to serve Alcohol and also have Reliable Transportation.

Herrington on the Bay is an Eco-Lifestyle Event Design and Catering service located at Herrington Harbour, a premiere marina resort on the Chesapeake Bay. The Brass Tacks

  • Maintains responsibility for day-to-day operation of the kitchen and has complete responsibility for the kitchen in its entirety
  • Ensure high standard of food quality and consistency for all menu items
  • Develops and implements procedures to ensure that all work practices meet or exceed the established standards
  • Manage food cost, labor cost and waste management to achieve set budgetary targets
  • Communicates regularly with Executive Chef and General Manager for updates, changes and revisions to existing contracts, practices and procedures.
  • Maintains standards for food quality, presentation, handling, sanitation and safety. Follows all appropriate policies and procedures
  • Ensures timely and courteous follow-through on all client, guest, and team member requests
  • Assists in the selection, supervision, training, development, scheduling, evaluating, disciplining, and counseling of staff
  • Demonstrates positive leadership characteristics that empower and inspire employees to meet and exceed standards
  • Monitors food and labor costs
  • Conducts daily walk-through of all walk-in refrigerators, dry storage areas and food lines to ensure rotation, usage, cleanliness and proper sanitation
  • Prepares and manages the creation of new menu items
  • Ensures attractive, consistent presentations of food items, both buffet and plated
  • Interacts/supervises line cooks to monitor quality, presentation and consistency of food items prepared
  • Handles all needs and accommodates customer requests in a timely manner
  • Conducts product inventories, ordering and receiving of product
  • Responsible for team adherence to standards for sanitation and safe food handling
  • Responsible for all opening and closing kitchen procedures

The Nitty Gritty

  • A culinary arts degree and/or equivalent training with 5+ years in industry and 2+ years of experience in a culinary management role in a similar environment
  • Must possess excellent business communication skills (both written and verbal) in order to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries
  • Ability to demonstrate and re-enforce basic and advanced culinary skills
  • Proven record of managing, training & motivating a diverse team
  • Experience ordering and cultivating relationships with purveyors
  • Strong inventory management and waste efficiency skills, positive food cost & labor cost numbers
  • Department of Health Certification, plus Food Allergen & Food Safety Certified
  • Must be flexible and able to perform multiple tasks, work in stressful situations with shifting priorities
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other computer programs.

Event Coordinator

This position requires someone who is extremely hospitable in nature, patient and detail-oriented. Our Event Coordinators lead, inspire, and help oversee successful events at Herrington on the Bay as well as fulfill the expectations of the Company’s purpose, vision and mission through the use of the Company’s core values.

Must be able to keep track of, coordinate and execute every detail of a wedding or other catered event.

Food Service experience requested. Must be positive, friendly, professional and organized. Expect to work most weekends and evenings. Must have an extremely flexible schedule to accommodate last-minute event bookings.

This position is physically demanding, including 10+ hour shifts on your feet, moving tables and chairs, and working in tented events outside without air conditioning. Our Event Coordinators are expected to work alongside the staff for the entirety of the event.

A smaller portion of the work week is at a desk in the office doing paperwork and communicating with clients.

The Brass Tacks

  • Responsible for training, supervising, and leading all event staff.
  • Coordinates all assigned catered functions. May work directly with the customer in setting up and following through on all details of the event.
  • Reviews and has a thorough understanding of all paperwork to coordinate scheduled events. Learns and completes own event paperwork to ensure a successful event.
  • Meets weekly with the departments to plan and coordinate scheduled events to ensure the efficient execution of the event and that it adheres to the client’s invoice/contract and expectations.
  • Inspects venue space prior to scheduled event to check whether room setup, menu, and schedule of events conform to the functions sheet.
  • Greet financially responsible clients prior to the onset of the function and is present throughout the duration to assist where needed. Periodically checks with client/VIPs to ensure satisfaction with the function and to respond to any additional requests.
  • Continually directs and assists banquet staff during the entire event to ensure that all details are carried out according to the client’s specifications.
  • Supervises cleanup and breakdown of function after its completion; accounts for all equipment and supplies; and ensures its return to storage area.

The Nitty Gritty

Schedule: Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays, late nights, and any other times as required to coordinate parties and perform any other job responsibilities.

Education: Two-year associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college desired. Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language of clients, banquet staff and other employees.

Experience: Must possess general knowledge of food and beverage and service procedures, generally involving two years as a server, dining room manager, or host/host.

Physical: Must be able to stand and exert fast-paced mobility for periods of up to four hours in length and to lift, bend, and stoop. Must have the ability to frequently lift 30 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsible for the overall presentation and proper function of the facilities at Herrington on the Bay. Work with all departments to collaboratively keep venues “show-ready” at all times.

Responsible for the overall presentation and proper function of the facilities at Herrington on the Bay. Work with all departments to collaboratively keep venues “show-ready” at all times.

Expected to know and understand the entire facility and all mechanisms associated with the function of this full-service event and catering company with respect to all facilities, buildings, vehicles, mechanical equipment, commercial kitchen equipment, HVAC, as well as the landscaping and grounds.

Responsible for keeping all facilities furniture, fixtures, equipment, buildings in great shape and functioning very well. Must have some carpentry and general mechanical skills. Responsible for repairing and maintaining physical structures, grounds, and equipment.

Requires professionalism at all levels including effective supervision skills, coaching, mentoring and managing staff. Oversight and managing of trades as needed. Expectations include tracking and budgeting expenses, project/ improvement planning in conjunction with the General Manager and owner and maintaining the highest standards of customer satisfaction.

Work with all departments to collaboratively problem solve to meet clients vision. Responsible for participation in and coordinating daily work functions of the maintenance staff and vendors.

  • Assigns tasks, schedules maintenance staff according to priorities, and works with staff as well as supervises team members on a daily basis.
  • Reviews service requests and prioritizes based upon task requirements and assignments.
  • Performs and/or schedules preventive and corrective maintenance for all properties and equipment. Keeps an accurate and current inventory of all equipment and materials and keeps shop and storage facilities in a clean, orderly, and functional condition.
  • Responsible for timely, daily entry of pertinent data into all aspects of computer system to ensure procedures are followed.
  • Communicates and coordinates repair and or maintenance with vendors, contractors, and customers.
  • Obtains quotes and prepares requisitions for materials and or equipment related to repair and maintenance. Reviews and approves service bills.
  • Responsible for implementing a safety plan and system for facilities maintenance personnel.
  • Responds to after-hours service calls and determines appropriate course of action.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual budget for the facilities maintenance division.
  • Ability to work on assigned projects as needed both independently and as a team member.
  • Must be knowledgeable and adhere to environmental, health and safety processes including MSDS programs, fall protection, electrical safety, and other related programs.
  • Instructs and trains staff in the safe operation of equipment.
  • Recommends the formulation of department operating procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Makes recommendation to management regarding hiring and firing, evaluates staff and makes recommendations for performance evaluations when applicable.
  • Ability to read blueprints, manuals and schematics.

Our Wedding & Special Event Sales Consultant will meet with potential wedding couples, listen to their needs, tour them of the property, create an initial cost proposal and custom catering menu for their big day, initial contracts, and booking paperwork. Our team is comprised of people who are high energy, detail-oriented, hospitable and welcoming, creative, efficient, respectful, numbers-oriented, and genuine.

The Gist:

To sell events that can be successfully executed by Herrington on the Bay while providing expert advice and direction to all clients for positive events; including logistics, menu creation, event design and understanding and meeting guest’s visions to ensure profitable operations for HOTB. Fulfills the expectations of the Company’s purpose, vision and mission through the use of the Company’s core values. Participates as an active, contributing, and relevant member of the Sales Team. Reports to Director of Sales and Marketing and Leadership Team. Compensation is comprised of a base salary with a commission and bonus structure.

The Goals:

Collaborate as an active, relevant, contributing member of the Sales Team to discuss, develop, and implement Company policy and procedures to meet the goals of Herrington on the Bay.

Develop a holistic understanding of the Herrington on the Bay vision and Sales strategic goals, initiatives and tactics.

Grow sales by ensuring inquiries and leads are responded to in an enthusiastic and timely manner, new business is sought out through networking and prospecting, prospects are converted to clients, and clients expectations are met through effective communication and service.

Observes and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the standard operating procedures of the Sales Department and Herrington on the Bay; Identifies opportunities for improvements; and Collaborates with all stakeholders to affect change.

Handles inquiries and objections during initial sales/planning process; attempts to resolve obstacles in accordance with company policy.

Supports Sales Department’s annual goals in conjunction with the Company goals.

Supports appropriate, efficient and effective implementation of the Sales Department’s goals, objectives, policy and priorities in order to support the purpose vision and mission of Herrington on the Bay.

Follows Sales Department budgets. Assumes fiduciary responsibility of all decisions and action performed by the Sales Department Team. Ensures appropriate staffing levels, allocation and use of company resources.

Stay informed of new trends and innovations in the wedding and event industry. Provide guidance on the incorporation of positive, do-able and relevant items into Herrington on the Bay’s facility, products and services.

Partner with Operations and Planning Departments to ensure events are correctly prepared for and executed. 

Work closely with Culinary in the development of quality, creative and timely presentations, tastings and proposals.

Ensure accurate and comprehensive files are maintained with proposals and contracts.

Partner with Accounting/Billing Department to ensure the compilation of accurate billing and the collection of accounts receivables.

Perform other responsibilities identified by the Director of Sales and Marketing, Owner, General Manager and Leadership Team.

The Nitty Gritty

College Education preferred

3-5 years previous catering sales and/or banquet assistant manager/captain experience.

Excellent reading, writing and oral proficiency in the English language

Strong selling and interpersonal skills

High level of creativity

Attention to detail

Ability to handle multiple tasks and make decisions in a fast-paced client driven environment

Ability to work weekends and holidays
